Ruan Orchid is a popular Thai restaurant. The decor is authentic if a little tired, whilst the cuisine is inconsistent and the service friendly albeit a bit haphazard.
After much research before a recent visit to Chester, myself and my partner decided on this restaurant to end a lovely night out. This was a mistake. Both of us are fairly well travelled and I consider us very broad minded when it comes to food, however, this was perhaps a little "too authentic" for our tastes. We went for the chicken wrapped in Pandanus leaf and the minced pork in fried baskets. Neither were unpleasant but both were a little bland but perfectly edible and not something you would send back to the kitchen. It was the main course that brought the most amusement to the table. I plumped for the Massaman (muslim) curry which to be fair, was a delight and a huge portion. This was fortunate because the seabass my partner had ordered was floating in a heavily scented broth which had the consistency and aroma of fresh washing up water. Therefore, we picked out the fish, left the rest and enjoyed the curry between us. Maybe it was what we ordered but it very rare that we go out and don't enjoy our meal. I doubt that I will return.
